What does a voltage reducer do???
A voltage reducer takes the full 36 or 48 volt output from all of your batteries & coverts/reduces it down to a 12 volt output. So if you are going to install lights, radio, or any other 12 volt accessory, you would overload & damage the accessory due to a high voltage input that the accessory was not meant to receive.

Why do I need a voltage reducer when I can just use 2 of my 6 volt batteries in series to get 12 volts???
First is if your 48 Volt cart has (6) 8 volt batteries you can't achieve 12 volts. The math simply does not work.
Secondly by using 2 of your 6 volt or 1 of your 12 volt batteries, your accessories draw down those batteries which you need to help power your cart. Over time those batteries will run out of power long before the others. This wouldn't be too bad if they recharged fully, but they don't because the other batteries have more voltage left in them when it is time to recharge your cart! Initially you won't notice those two batteries do not come up to full recharge as the others do but soon the two overused batteries will fail prematurely.
Long story short a voltage reducer cost less than replacing most batteries.
